Exploring the Depths of the Mind: Mediumship and Intuition

Can Anyone Receive Messages from the Other Side? A Medium Explains How It Actually Works

As the leaves change and the air turns crisp, a curious phenomenon sweeps through the world of psychics, mediums, and intuitive professionals. Mainstream media briefly normalizes talk of death, life after death, ghosts, spirit communication, and mysticism, making autumn the busiest season of the year for those of us who live in these realms full time. One question arrives more than any other: can anyone receive messages from the other side?

The short answer is a resounding yes, though it’s a skill requiring consistent practice and dedication. What follows is the honest map: how the connection works, the technique I use to sharpen it, the misconceptions worth burying, and the mediums who walked this road before us.

Does the Veil Really Get Thinner at Halloween?

The veil is always thin. That’s why it’s called a veil.

Let’s dispel the seasonal myth first: the “veil” between our world and the afterlife doesn’t magically thin as Halloween approaches. The veil is always thin. Gossamer is the entire job description.

The only real barrier between our world and the afterlife is our own minds. Think of your subconscious as an infinite iCloud, storing boundless universal information, including the messages we upload while we sleep. As enigmatic as outer space and as deep as the ocean, the subconscious is where the meeting actually happens.

Being a medium means straddling the line between the conscious and subconscious, acting as a conduit for messages that bridge both worlds. Nobody needs a holiday’s permission to stand at that threshold.

How Does Clairvoyance Work in the Mind’s Eye?

Picture an apple. You just found the doorway.

Messages from the other side often begin with clairvoyance, the mind’s eye. Imagine an apple right now. Asked to point at where you see it, you’d likely gesture toward your forehead, between your eyes, the region long associated with the pineal gland and its ancient link to inner vision.

When I sit with a client, tarot cards provide a structural framework, and the mind’s eye is where the actual receiving happens: vivid impressions and images not of my making. Before each session I clear my mind, relax physically, and stay mentally open, and flipping each card either confirms or sharpens the clairvoyant impressions already arriving.

Worth restating for anyone new here: the cards themselves are a psychic and reflective tool. The mediumship runs purely through the clairs, and the deck simply gives those impressions somewhere orderly to land.

What Does a Medium Actually Feel During a Session?

Trust the first impression. Say it out loud. Every time.

Across an hour-long session, sensitivity extends well past clairvoyance into other heightened senses: emotions, feelings, and physical sensations on my skin, each one validating the mental impressions as they arrive. Clairsentience keeps clairvoyance honest.

Trust is the hinge, and it builds over time. Establishing the connection means trusting your first instinct for each impression, boldly articulating what you see and feel, and having faith that it holds meaning for the person in front of you. The accuracy is often astonishing, and it only becomes astonishing after you’ve been brave enough to say the strange thing out loud.

What Is the 4 Fold Lunar Breath Technique?

Four counts, one moon, and your intuition switches on.

A crescent moon reflected in a dark still lake, evoking lunar energy for the four fold breath

My favorite technique for enhancing intuition is the 4 Fold Lunar Breath, a practice that draws in divine feminine energy and strengthens inner vision. It works anytime, anywhere, in just a few moments.

  1. Visualize the full moon. Close your eyes and picture the bright full moon, its radiant silver light illuminating everything in its path.
  2. Inhale the moonlight. Breathe in deeply for a count of four, imagining the silvery-white light entering your bloodstream through your lungs.
  3. Exhale the brilliance. Release for a count of four, visualizing moonlight enveloping your body in an egg-shaped aura extending from every pore.
  4. Hold and illuminate. Hold for a count of four, envisioning the full moon’s brilliance lighting up your mind from within.

The technique draws inspiration from Damien Echols, the ceremonial magician who summoned angels daily while on death row and now walks free, proof that inner practice needs nothing but a mind willing to work.

What Are the Biggest Misconceptions About Mediumship?

Counting down to the mix-up nearly everybody makes.

  1. Mediums can predict the future. Mediumship connects with spirits and relays their messages; it is not a tool for lottery numbers or forecasting specific events.
  2. Mediums know everything about you. Information arrives from spirit on a need-to-know basis. Specific details come through; omniscience does not.
  3. All mediums are the same. Some specialize in departed loved ones, others in spirit guides, and skill levels, techniques, and styles vary enormously.
  4. Mediums are always in contact with the spirit world. Connection requires a focused state entered deliberately during a session. Outside of it, we lead entirely normal lives, grocery lists and all.
  5. Mediumship is a scam. Fraudulent operators exist, and ethical mediums vastly outnumber them, working to provide comfort, closure, and guidance. Research your reader and the difference shows fast.
  6. Mediums control or command spirits. Communication rests on willingness and consent from both sides. Spirits choose when and how; we act as intermediaries, never puppeteers.
  7. Mediums can remove negative entities. Be deeply cautious of anyone claiming full entity removal, usually for a fee. Real mediums connect and relay; they don’t run exorcism side hustles.
  8. Mediumship is against religious beliefs. Opinions vary widely across traditions, and respect runs in every direction. Plenty of devout people sit at my table.
  9. Mediumship is always emotional and dramatic. Some sessions bring tears; many bring quiet, ordinary comfort. Closure is often gentler than television suggests.
  10. Mediums and psychics are the same thing. The big one. Psychic ability perceives information about the past, present, or future; mediumship specifically connects with spirits through the clairs. Some mediums are psychic, and not all psychics are mediums. Knowing the difference tells you exactly what kind of session to book.

Who Are the Most Famous Mediums in History?

Eight names that carried the craft, saving the greatest for last.

  1. Estelle Roberts (1889-1970): one of Spiritualism’s most respected figures, who conducted thousands of séances and ranked among the finest trance mediums of her era.
  2. Eileen Garrett (1893-1970): the Irish trance medium who founded the Parapsychology Foundation, insisting her own abilities be studied scientifically.
  3. Edgar Cayce (1877-1945): the “Sleeping Prophet,” whose thousands of trance readings on health, spirituality, and past lives still shape holistic practice today.
  4. Allison DuBois: the American medium who inspired the TV series Medium, known for her work alongside law enforcement.
  5. George Anderson: celebrated for a compassionate approach that has reconnected countless people with their departed loved ones.
  6. James Van Praagh: the American medium and author whose books and television work brought spirit communication to a mass audience.
  7. John Edward: host of Crossing Over, whose live audience readings popularized mediumship in mainstream culture.
  8. Doris Stokes (1920-1987): the greatest evidential medium of her time, full stop. Her public demonstrations and books brought comfort to millions, and her standard of specific, verifiable evidence remains the bar every working medium should be measured against, mine included.

Fair-minded readers should know the legitimacy of mediumship remains debated, and opinions on these figures vary widely. Read skeptically, watch the vintage footage, and let the evidence make its own case.

Receiving messages from the other side is a journey into intuition and mediumship that anyone can begin. The veil is already thin, your subconscious is already listening, and the 4 Fold Lunar Breath will strengthen your inner vision whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or brand new to the path. Embrace this season of mystical energies and start your own exploration of the unknown.
